Navigating French Long-Stay Visa Requirements
Navigating French Visa Requirements
Navigating the path to obtaining a French visa can be complex, but we have crafted the ultimate checklist for your French long-stay visa application. From crucial documents to application insights, we've got your back.
What is a VLS-TS Visa and who is suitable? (visa long séjour valant titre de séjour)
If you're a non-EU citizen (including British Citizens) planning to move to France for more than 90 days, you will need to apply for a VLS-TS long-stay visa, or a French residence permit to live in France. It is issued to non-EU citizens planning to stay in France for over 90 days. Most VLS-TS visas are valid for up to 1 year, (renewable for up to four more years as a Titre de Sejour) but this can vary depending on the type applied for.
What documents do I need for VLS-TS Visa application?
The exact documents required will vary depending on the type of long-stay visa you are applying for, but you should be prepared to provide the following information:
Completed VLS-TS Visa Application Form
Valid passport (with at least 3 months validity after planned departure date)
Passport-size Photos (check for number required)
Visa Fee - £99 in UK.
Proof of Accommodation (either proof of purchase or rental agreement or une attestation d'hébergement)
Handwritten declaration confirming you will not exercise any professional activity in France (if applying for the VLS-T Visitor Visa)
Proof of Financial Means – Bank statements, investments, pensions etc.
Letter of Employment or Enrolment (if applying for work or study visa)
Birth and marriage certificate – translated into French and certified.

Criminal record check (only for work permit visas)
It's essential to check the specific requirements for the type of visa you are applying for and the latest updates from the French consulate or embassy in your home country. You can find a comprehensive guide and frequently asked questions on the French-visas website.
When should I apply for a French Visa?
All applications and accompanying documentation should be submitted to your local French Consulate at least 3 months prior to your planned arrival.
Validate your visa once you arrive in France!
You MUST validate your VLS-TS with French Immigration and Citizens Office (OFII) within 3 months of moving to France. If you fail to do so, you will no longer be legally present in France. The validation process is now completely online.
French Visa Renewal
If you wish to remain in France at the end of the validity of your VLS-TS, you will have to apply for a residence permit. You should initiate a renewal 2 months prior to your visa’s expiry. You must submit a one-year Carte de Sejour Visiteur Residency Permit application at your local Prefecture.
At the end of the second year, you can apply for a multi-residency permit, which is valid for a maximum of 3 years. After 5 years*, you can apply for a 10-year Carte de Séjour permanent.
* Your five years in France must have been continuous, with absence of no more than ten months over the five years, and no more than six months in any one year.
